Last night we went over to a friends house to check out their Play Station 2 (PS2) and their Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) setup. Basically this is a game that is available the arcades, on PS2 and XBOX. You have to buy a dance pad that has 6-9 squares that you press with your feet. The basics of game play is there are 4 directions left, up, down, right that correspond to squares on the pad. (If you look at your numeric key pad, up=8, down=2, left=4 and right=6 and you generally stand in the middle=5). On the DDR disk there are about 60 dance songs. As the song plays, the games shows you which square to hit with your feet. It is a pretty simple concept and it is relatively easy at the beginning levels but it can get very difficult. The one thing that makes this game different from most games is it gives you a pretty good workout and it is fun.
We went to this friends because we are thinking of buying a PS2 or Xbox, DDR and some pads to help us exercise. It was our first time actually trying this game although we have watched it a number of times. The really funny thing was that Ilea and Kyler wanted to try it after we were done and watching this friends family do it so well. Ilea got on and tried a few but was pretty frustrated. Then Kyler jumped on and would just run back and forth across the pad. He was pretty funny. I think if we got this setup that both kids would be able to do it in a fair amount of time (although both kids may need to grow a bit more becauase you need to be able to spread your feet and hit both the left and right (or top and bottom) squares at the same time. Anyway I think they would have a good time. I'm not sure when (or if) we will get this, but maybe after the next PS2 or XBOX price drop that I recently heard about.
